Jobs and Houses

And so life around here continues on...

Spent some time cleaning the condo this morning. I've come to the conclusion that the Husband and I are not good housekeepers. This will need to change when there are three of us in the house, and when there's more house to keep. Of course, it would help if I wasn't so overwhelmingly tired. I folded two loads of laundry this morning and then needed to stop and rest. Not loving that part.

Celebrating this weekend, though. I have officially hit the 20 week mark, which means I'm halfway pregnant! This is a very exciting thing, even if a little scary, since it shows me really about how much time we have until the baby arrives. It doesn't seem like that long ago I was peeing on a stick. Regardless, it seemed like a good reason to open a bottle of sparkling cider and lift our glasses.

The Husband decided this morning that he wants to quit his job, join a union and operate heavy machinery for a living. Actually, the quitting-his-job part has been coming for a long time. The heavy machinery part, though, is news to me. I'm not entirely surprised, though. His two closest friends are union guys who spend their days working with their hands. He told me this morning that he'd wanted to do something like that for a long time, but that he'd always thought of them as "lesser" jobs, not quite worthy of him. It amazes me sometimes that he can't hear Betsy's voice coming out of his mouth.

Hey--as far as I'm concerned, if it makes him happy and it means we don't have to live in a tent, he should go for it. And sadly, we didnt' win the mega-millions jackpot last night, so we still need to have jobs, so it should be something he likes to do, right?

Haven't mentioned the New House in here for a while, I know. We hit a little bit of a snag. The binder was signed, and the deposit put down, but the town has put us on hold. Apparently, there needs to be 75 feet of street frontage and 100 feet through the house to the edge of the lot for each buildable lot in the town. When the two lots (ours, which already has a house on it, and my mom's, which is vacant), the NEW lot is fine, but it leaves the old lot about 15 feet short through the house to the edge.

The present owners have applied for a variance, and the case will be heard at the planning committee meeting on Thursday night. We'll be sitting in the back with our fingers crossed! One of the guys selling took a petition around to all the neighbors, asking them to sign in support of the variance. Ten of the 15 signed. One, the woman who directly abuts the vacant lot on the other side, refused. She had wanted to buy a small piece of the land to build a house for her son. Paul and Co. would have sold it to her, but not for the price she wanted. Consequently, she's making trouble. Apparently, the other people who wouldn't sign are friends of hers.

On the good side, there are several members of the planning board who will speak out in favor of the variance at the meeting, members who know what crawled up this woman's ass. Our inside source tells us things still look good, espepecially since she appears to have very little case. What's she going to say? "I don't want a house there unless it's mine!"?!?!?!?!

So, we should know shortly after Thursday if we're moving or not. If the variance goes through, my mom's house and the condo go on the market in early July. If not...well, I'm not sure exactly what happens then. But since we've already started thinking of it as "our house" and started planning what we're going to do in it, we're going on the belief that it will pass.

Oops--the Husband is out of the shower. That's my cue to step in!
